WATCH: Another summer swamp cooler failure in an Arizona prison

The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry said an evaporative cooler at Lewis Prison’s Bachman Unit was being repaired for four days this week.

The outage lasted from Friday through Monday. Relatives of inmates contacted ABC15 and raised concerns about extremely hot conditions inside the unit.

Phoenix temperatures during that period reached between 93 and 107 degrees. The department said it provides free ice to inmates when indoor temperatures pass certain thresholds.

Bachman and two other units at Lewis Prison are still waiting for funding for HVAC improvements. An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect from Thursday through Monday, which could put more strain on the prison’s aging swamp coolers.
