Video shows police take down suspect seconds after Tucson mass shooting

Monday, July 27, 2026 · Reported by AZ Family

New surveillance video shows Tucson police taking a shooting suspect into custody within seconds after gunfire near East Congress Street and Sixth Avenue.

The video, recorded outside Empire Pizza & Pub, shows David Leroy French firing down the street while walking backward shortly after 2 a.m. July 19. He then runs through the roadway.

About eight seconds after the shooting stopped, officers arrived and pointed their flashlights at French. Police said an officer shot him. At least three officers surrounded him before paramedics arrived, while three others ran to help the people who had been shot.

Nine people were hurt. French was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later appeared in court from his hospital bed. He faces 19 charges, including aggravated assault and discharging a firearm at a structure. Court documents say the incident began with an argument between two groups outside the pizza place.
