U of A expands hazing‑prevention initiatives after investigation finds code violations

The University of Arizona is expanding its campuswide efforts to prevent hazing after a Dean of Students investigation found several violations of the Arizona Board of Regents Student Code of Conduct. The findings included hazing and behavior that put student safety at risk.

The university will bring together fraternity and sorority leaders, school officials and representatives of national organizations at the beginning of the fall semester to review safety and conduct expectations. It also plans to extend hazing education to more student groups and require new members of fraternities and sororities to complete prevention training earlier in the joining process.

Dean of Students staff will pursue Hazing Prevention Institute certification, and the university will hire a full-time Student Affairs employee focused on prevention programs and education. These efforts will add to existing programs, including Wildcats Don’t Haze, required Greek organization training and campaigns encouraging students to report concerns.

The university also withdrew recognition of Sigma Alpha Mu for five years, effective immediately through May 2031. The fraternity cannot operate as a recognized student organization or use university facilities, equipment and services. U of A officials said the investigation’s findings do not represent the broader fraternity and sorority community, which includes more than 50 organizations and nearly 7,000 members.
