Tucson Speaks Out: July 21

Letters for July 21 addressed David Fitzsimmons’ cartoon archives, elections, water security and local politics. One writer criticized Lee Enterprises for not allowing the retired Arizona Daily Star cartoonist to donate his work to the University of Arizona Library’s Special Collections. The writer said the cartoons, dating to 1986, document Southern Arizona history.

Several letters focused on elections and national politics. One urged Tucsonans to register, educate and turn out voters, while saying local officials are prepared to protect election integrity. Other writers criticized President Donald Trump’s statements about the economy, election fraud and voting rules, and called for greater participation in upcoming elections.

Water was another major topic. One letter questioned the Star’s report that Tucson has a 100-year water supply, calling the message misleading. Another said residents, businesses and industries all contribute to water demand and argued that Arizona should seek cooperative solutions rather than simply blaming mining, data centers, tourism or growth.

Political letters also criticized U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani and promoted JoAnna Mendoza as an alternative, while another questioned Arizona Corporation Commission candidate Ralph Heap’s record. A separate letter described offensive comments by Stephen Miller about protesters and said the remarks reflected prejudice toward people based on their appearance and disabilities.
