Tucson's Alex Bowman to Retire from Full-Time NASCAR Racing After 2027 Season

Tucson native Alex Bowman plans to retire from full-time NASCAR Cup Series racing after the 2027 season. He has signed a one-year contract extension with Hendrick Motorsports, where he has spent most of his career.

Bowman has won eight Cup Series points races and qualified for the playoffs seven times since becoming a full-time Hendrick driver in 2018. He also made 10 starts for the team in 2016 while Dale Earnhardt Jr. recovered from an injury, then worked as Hendrick’s primary simulator testing driver in 2017.

The 2027 season will be Bowman’s 10th with Hendrick Motorsports. He is expected to pass 400 career Cup Series starts next season and has already made 307 starts for Hendrick, sixth most in team history.

Bowman said the decision came after carefully considering his future and listening to his body. He thanked team owner Rick Hendrick, sponsors Ally Financial and Chevrolet, and the Hendrick organization. Bowman said his focus through 2027 will be competing for wins and finishing his full-time career on a high note.
