Tucson restaurants hit by rising supplier costs

Tucson restaurants are facing higher prices from suppliers, making it harder to keep menu prices affordable. Owners say the increases affect more than food, with utilities, repairs and other operating costs also rising.

Jackie Kuder, owner of Kingfisher Bar and Grill, said all 15 of the restaurant’s suppliers recently announced price increases. Beef, seafood, tomatoes and romaine lettuce have seen some of the largest jumps. Water and trash expenses have also increased.

Baja Cafe owner Gerard Meurer said beef prices have been especially difficult, while equipment repairs have also become more expensive because of higher labor and service call costs.

Both owners said they are trying to limit the effect on customers. Baja Cafe is keeping its 6 to 8 special deals, while Kingfisher is adjusting its summer menus to use ingredients that cost less but can still be featured in elevated dishes.
