Tucson protesters join national demonstrations over ICE shootings

Members of the Party of Socialism and Liberation gathered with community members in downtown Tucson to protest recent deaths involving ICE officers. The demonstrations are part of a wave of protests across the country.

Organizers spoke out over the deaths of Sebastian Guerrero in Maine and Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston. They also cited the death of a man in Florida who was struck by a tractor-trailer while fleeing ICE.

DHS said both Guerrero and Salgado were not the intended targets of ICE operations and claimed they tried to flee. The agency said an officer fired at Guerrero during a vehicle stop on July 13, and that Salgado was shot during an attempted stop on July 7 after allegedly ramming an ICE vehicle and disobeying commands.

PSL organizer Brinley Carillo said the issue is personal because she comes from an immigrant family. Activist Karla Toledo, who said ICE detained her two months ago, also spoke at the protest and said undocumented people still have the right to speak publicly and support their communities.
