Tucson police recruit murder suspect Alex Barnett arrested

The manhunt tied to the killing of a Tucson police recruit ended Monday night on the city’s east side, where Alex James Barnett surrendered after a three hour standoff at an apartment complex near East Broadway and South Camino Seco. Barnett, 33, is accused of taking part in the Aug. 19 home invasion that killed Carlos Ramirez, a 23 year old recruit nearing graduation from the Tucson Police Department academy. The shooting also wounded Ramirez’s pregnant fiancée, a 23 year old Pima County corrections officer, and occurred while their child was inside the home.

Pima Regional SWAT officers surrounded an apartment at the Desert Atrium complex while deputies worked to serve a warrant connected to the investigation. Negotiators communicated with Barnett for about three hours before he surrendered peacefully at approximately 9 p.m., according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. He was taken into custody and booked into the Pima County jail. Officials have not said whether he was armed when he surrendered, and they have not released a possible motive. Investigators said those details remain part of the ongoing case.

Barnett appeared by video in court Tuesday morning. A judge ordered him held without bond on allegations of first degree murder, armed robbery and aggravated assault. His no bond hearing was scheduled for Aug. 31, with a preliminary hearing set for Sept. 1. The charges stem from the fatal shooting at the home in the 7700 block of South Enchanted Spring Drive, in southwest Tucson. Ramirez’s fiancée was shot in the shoulder and is expected to survive, authorities said.

Court documents describe a violent confrontation inside the house. Ramirez’s fiancée told investigators she heard banging outside the bedroom and that Ramirez entered the room, urging her to retrieve a gun from a safe. She said Ramirez told her two masked men were inside. The intruders were described as wearing dark clothing, balaclava style face coverings and having tattoos on their arms. Ramirez reportedly fought with the men before a gun was fired. He was struck and killed during the struggle.

Investigators connected Barnett and Santiago Jorge Rogers, 39, to the case through surveillance footage. A video from a Shell station at 5405 West Valencia Road, about three miles from the crime scene, showed the two men shopping shortly before the shooting. Court records say they purchased three hats and dark gloves. Investigators also tracked a dark Acura SUV, believed to have been used in the crime, as it left the area. The vehicle was later abandoned in a parking lot near Palo Verde Road and 33rd Street, roughly a 30 minute drive from the home.

Authorities say a third man was recorded leaving the Acura and appeared to wipe down the vehicle before walking away. He was located and interviewed over the weekend but had not been arrested or charged as of Tuesday. His name has not been released. Officials have also said there was no known connection between Ramirez, his fiancée, and Barnett or Rogers. The sheriff’s department issued a Blue Alert for Barnett on Aug. 20, as investigators searched across parts of Arizona for the man they identified as the primary suspect.

Rogers was arrested Saturday morning, Aug. 22, at a hotel near the 4800 block of South Palo Verde Road. He is accused of first degree murder, aggravated assault and armed robbery and was also ordered held without bond. Authorities say Rogers has an Arizona criminal record that includes a 2007 weapons misconduct conviction in Pima County, shoplifting and drug possession convictions in Yavapai County in 2018, promotion of prison contraband in Graham County in 2021, and attempted promotion of prison contraband in Navajo County in 2022. The spelling of the county name appears differently in some records, but officials identified the convictions as part of his history.

Barnett’s record also extends across multiple felony cases. Court records show convictions for child abuse, theft and drug possession in 2012, followed by theft and credit card fraud in 2013. In 2021, he was convicted of vehicle theft, weapons misconduct, burglary and identity theft. He was convicted of unlawful imprisonment in 2024 and had spent periods in prison over the past decade. Court information also indicates he was most recently released in late 2025. The details of his prior cases will likely be examined as the murder prosecution moves forward.

The arrest brought relief to Barnett’s family members who gathered near the apartment complex during the standoff. His brother, Shane Barnett, said he had not spoken with Alex in seven years and had recently been released from prison. He said he was grateful to learn that his brother was safe. Their father was asked by police to help persuade Barnett to come out, according to Shane. The sheriff’s department also thanked Tucson residents, saying tips from the community helped investigators locate suspects. Ramirez’s death has drawn a strong response from Tucson’s law enforcement community and prompted a local foundation to rally support for his family. The investigation continues, including the role of the unidentified third man and the circumstances surrounding the home invasion.
