Tucson chef Jose Contreras builds on culinary legacy, new restaurant opening soon

Friday, October 16, 2026 · Reported by KGUN 9 Local News

For Tucson residents who follow the city’s restaurants, Jose Contreras is preparing to add another destination to the local food scene. The chef and owner of Amelia’s Mexican Kitchen is developing Carrizal Molino Mas Cocina near downtown Tucson along Speedway Boulevard. The new restaurant will extend a career built on family recipes, Mexican culinary traditions and flavors connected especially to Sonora, while giving Contreras a new setting for the cooking that has brought him recognition in Tucson and beyond.

Contreras traces that work back to his grandmother, Amelia. He watched her cook and drew inspiration from the recipes and techniques that shaped his understanding of food. That family connection is also reflected in the name of Amelia’s Mexican Kitchen, where Contreras continues to serve customers on Oracle Road. His approach combines the influence of his grandmother with a broader effort to represent the food traditions of Mexico and the regional character of Sonoran cooking.

Amelia’s has become a familiar name for people exploring Tucson’s food scene. The restaurant’s reputation has grown through its Mexican cuisine and Contreras’ presence in the kitchen. For diners, the restaurant offers more than a meal associated with a recognized chef. It is also a place where ingredients and flavors tied to Mexican heritage, Sonora and Tucson come together. Contreras said customer reactions remain among the most rewarding parts of operating the restaurant, particularly when diners tell him they enjoyed the food.

That response was on display when a customer identified as DJ visited Amelia’s for the first time. DJ described the meal as amazing and joked that it was good enough to bring him back within hours for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The reaction captures the kind of immediate connection Contreras said he values. Although awards and public attention have expanded his profile, positive feedback from people eating at the restaurant remains a central part of the experience for him.

Contreras’ culinary work has also received attention outside Tucson. He was named a 2025 James Beard Award semifinalist, a significant recognition in the food world. He said the honors, including being recognized as the best chef in the Old Pueblo, went beyond what he and his team expected. The awards have helped draw attention to a style of cooking rooted in family and place, while also putting Tucson’s Mexican food scene in a wider spotlight.

More recently, Contreras traveled to New York to present his cooking and share ingredients and flavors associated with Tucson, Mexico and Sonora. That appearance gave him an opportunity to represent Southern Arizona while explaining the connections among the region’s food, its Mexican heritage and the culinary traditions of Sonora. His work has therefore moved between the neighborhood restaurant and national culinary circles, but the central influences have remained the same.

The next stage of that work will be Carrizal Molino Mas Cocina. Contreras has described the project as his last venture into fine dining. The restaurant is expected to feature flavors from regions across Mexico, expanding the focus beyond a single regional tradition and highlighting the country’s culinary diversity. Its planned location near downtown, along Speedway Boulevard, will place the project within reach of residents, workers and visitors already spending time in one of Tucson’s busiest central areas.

The opening also represents a continuation rather than a departure from Contreras’ culinary history. He is building on the recognition earned through Amelia’s while returning to the lessons and recipes passed down by his grandmother. The new restaurant will provide another way for him to develop those ideas and introduce diners to a wider range of Mexican flavors. At the same time, Amelia’s remains open on Oracle Road, keeping his established restaurant part of Tucson’s everyday food landscape as preparations continue for the new location.

No opening date for Carrizal Molino Mas Cocina was provided, but the project is now the focus of Contreras’ next chapter. For Tucson’s restaurant community, the planned opening offers another chance to see how a local chef translates family history into contemporary dining. For Contreras, it is an opportunity to broaden the culinary story he has been telling since opening Amelia’s, carrying his grandmother’s influence from her kitchen into a new restaurant intended to showcase traditions from across Mexico.
