TPD Chief: Tucson shooting victims recovering as suspect faces charges; police presence remains increased

Many of the people injured in the July 19 shooting in downtown Tucson have been released from the hospital, Tucson Police Chief Monica Prieto said. She added that all of the victims are continuing to recover.

Prieto credited Tucson police officers, Tucson firefighters, community members, local businesses and Banner University Medical Center staff for their response. She said officers used active threat training to quickly respond, stop the violence and provide trauma first aid to victims and the suspect.

The Downtown District had 20 uniformed officers, five uniformed sergeants and two community service officers working when the shooting occurred, according to Prieto. Tucson police will continue a substantial and highly visible presence downtown.

The suspect, 21-year-old David Leroy French, remains hospitalized but has been arrested and charged. He will be booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Complex after leaving the hospital. The Pima County Sheriff's Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Witnesses who have not spoken with investigators can call 520-351-4900.
