Three Points community speaks on proposed solar farm

Some Three Points residents and farmers are opposing a proposed solar farm that could cover more than 5,500 acres of Arizona State Land near Robles Junction.

Douglas Lowell, a local farmer and board member of the Altar Valley Conservation Alliance, learned about the proposal through the nonprofit. He has since organized meetings with neighbors to discuss concerns about habitat loss and the possible effect on wildlife.

Some residents are also worried about changes to the area’s agricultural zoning and potential increases in property taxes. Linda Saner, who has lived in Three Points for more than 50 years, said she is concerned the project could change the character of the community.

Other residents support expanding renewable energy. Laura Balderson, a Three Points resident since 1993, said reducing reliance on fossil fuels will require difficult choices. Pima County District 3 Supervisor Jennifer Allen said the company has not submitted a proposal to the county, and no decisions have been made. The Arizona State Land Department controls use of the land, but has not yet provided information about whether it would lease the property to the solar company.
