SVUSD preparing for new school year after closing 3 schools last academic year

Sierra Vista Unified School District is preparing for the new school year after closing three schools because of budget problems. The district now has four neighborhood schools, with three serving kindergarten through seventh grade and one serving kindergarten through eighth grade.

Staff have spent the summer moving classrooms, preparing buildings and helping families adjust to the changes. The remaining schools are Pueblo del Sol, Town and Country, Carmichael and Huachuca Mountain.

The district has enrolled 140 new students for the upcoming year, a positive change after years of declining enrollment. Pueblo del Sol is also welcoming students and staff from Village Meadows, with school leaders saying the merger will build on existing programs.

SVUSD previously faced a $5 million deficit, but the district has since corrected the shortfall and carried over nearly $1 million. Superintendent Terri Romo said the district can now focus more on academic achievement. Schools begin Aug. 5, and enrollment remains open.
