Sunnyside Unified School District kicks off new school year with Opening Day celebration for staff

More than 2,000 teachers, administrators and staff members gathered July 22 for Sunnyside Unified School District’s annual Opening Day celebration. The pep assembly-style event took place ahead of the district’s first day of school on July 29.

This year’s theme focused on believing in students and helping them see their potential. The event included a panel with three SUSD seniors and Superintendent Jose Gastelum, a staff performance and employee recognitions.

Staff members also took part in the traditional Spirit Stick competition. Educators said the celebration reminded them of their purpose and their commitment to supporting students.

Sunnyside teacher Mojgan Goharriz said educators can help students believe in themselves by guiding and supporting them. English Language Arts teacher Ryan Walker said his students and the district’s focus on helping all students succeed keep him returning each year.
