Strong Storms Target Tucson Before 110-Degree Heat Returns

Strong thunderstorms are possible across Southern Arizona on Monday before a sharp return to dangerous heat later in the week. Forecasters expect storms to form between noon and 2 p.m., beginning over the mountains and moving west and northwest through the afternoon and evening.

The strongest storms are most likely near the international border and along the Arizona-New Mexico line. They could produce damaging wind gusts, heavy rain, blowing dust and localized flash flooding. Much of Southeast Arizona is under a Marginal Risk for severe weather.

Tucson and central Pima County are expected to see fewer storms than areas farther south and east, but isolated to scattered thunderstorms could develop Monday evening into early Tuesday. The storms may continue Tuesday and Wednesday, with the best chances again near the border and state line.

Temperatures are expected to rise from 2 to 6 degrees above average through Wednesday to 7 to 12 degrees above normal by the weekend. Tucson could approach 110 degrees Friday, with Major to Extreme HeatRisk levels possible and heat advisories or warnings likely.
