South Tucson police offer $1,000 reward as copper wire thefts from streetlights on the rise

South Tucson police are investigating a growing number of copper wire thefts from streetlights along 4th Avenue, between 38th Street and 26th Street. Police say the thefts have become more frequent over the past year.

The stolen wiring leaves streets without lighting, creating safety concerns for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. The repairs are paid for by the city, adding costs for local taxpayers.

Police believe the thefts are deliberate because the wiring is being removed quickly. Copper can be sold to metal recycling businesses, making it an attractive target.

A reward of up to $1,000 is available through 88-CRIME for information that leads to an arrest. Police are asking anyone with relevant information to submit a tip, even if the detail seems minor.
