Sister José Women's Center needs donations as summer demand surges

Sister José Women’s Center is serving more women this summer as people seek relief from the heat and help with basic needs. The center is assisting about 90 women each day, compared with an average of 76 women per day last July.

The center also provides 54 overnight bed stays each night. CEO Mary Jeanne “MJ” Chavez said reduced SNAP benefits and extreme weather are bringing people in more often. The center’s cooling program began in March this year.

Donations are running low, especially hygiene supplies, new underwear, shoes for women in sizes 8 and larger, and bath and hand towels. The center is also seeking volunteers to help support women who use its services.
