Recall effort against Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos falls short
Thursday, July 23, 2026 · Reported by KGUN 9 Local News
The effort to recall Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has ended after organizers missed the July 10 deadline to submit petition signatures, according to the Pima County Elections Department.
Elections Director Constance L. Hargrove confirmed that the campaign did not turn in signatures in time to qualify the recall for the ballot. Organizer Daniel Butierez said the campaign collected more than 30,000 signatures, but that was not enough to move forward.
The recall effort began in March. Butierez cited concerns about Nanos’ leadership and the sheriff’s handling of the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said it respects the recall process and will remain focused on public safety. Nanos is expected to continue serving as sheriff as the county prepares for the November 3 election.
