Pima Regional Critical Incident Team releases new details on downtown mass shooting

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team has released more information about the July 19 shooting in downtown Tucson. Tucson Police officers heard gunfire near the 100 block of East Congress Street around 2 a.m. and found multiple people who had been shot.

The suspect was reportedly running with a weapon while bystanders were nearby. Officer Tanner Wolverton, a seven year Tucson Police Department veteran, ordered him to drop the weapon. When he did not comply, Wolverton fired, striking the suspect. Officers then arrested him and provided first aid.

Nine people were treated at the scene and taken to a hospital, along with the suspect. Investigators say the shooting followed a verbal argument on the sidewalk, during which the suspect fired a handgun several times. All nine victims are expected to survive.

The suspect, identified as 21 year old David Leroy French, remains hospitalized in stable condition. He was booked in absentia on nine counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, nine counts of aggravated assault causing serious injury and one count of discharging a firearm at a structure. Additional charges may be filed.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department is leading the criminal investigation, while Tucson Police is conducting a separate administrative review of its personnel's actions. Anyone with information can contact the Sheriff's Department at 520-351-4900 or 88-CRIME to remain anonymous.
