Pima County sheriff's deputies patrol school zones as back-to-school season ramps up

Pima County sheriff’s deputies are increasing patrols near schools as classes resume, focusing on speeding and distracted driving in school zones.

Deputies were monitoring traffic near Sycamore Elementary School in the morning with lidar devices that use lasers to measure vehicle speeds. When drivers are stopped, deputies may issue a warning or a fine.

The speed limit in the school zone is 15 mph. Fines for school zone violations range from $200 to $500.

The Sheriff’s Department has issued 133 school zone charges during the 2025-26 school year and 422 cases since the start of the 2021-22 school year. Deputies are reminding drivers to put down their phones, slow down and watch for children.
