Pima County Health Department investigates confirmed measles case

The Pima County Health Department is investigating a confirmed measles case involving a Tucson resident who was fully vaccinated and developed symptoms after international travel. The person is isolating and recovering at home and has not been hospitalized. Officials said the risk to the broader public remains low.

Potential exposure locations include La Posada Oro Valley on July 9 and 10, LA Fitness and Sprouts on North First Avenue on July 9, and QuikTrip on West River Road on July 10. Other locations are Tucson Mall on July 11, Banner University Medical Center South’s emergency department on July 14, and Walmart on East Wetmore Road on July 14.

People who were at those locations during the listed times should watch for symptoms through the dates provided by the Health Department. Symptoms can include fever, cough, a runny nose, red or watery eyes, and a rash that often starts on the face and spreads downward. Symptoms typically develop seven to 14 days after exposure.

Anyone who may have been exposed and develops symptoms should stay home, avoid contact with others, and call a health care provider or the Pima County Health Department at 520-724-7797 before seeking in-person care. The department is conducting contact tracing and may call from a 520-724 number or send a text message.

The MMR vaccine is about 93% effective after one dose and about 97% effective after two doses. Vaccinations are available at Pima County Health Department clinics, as well as many pharmacies, primary care offices, and federally qualified health centers.
