Nine people injured in Arizona shooting; suspect shot by police

Nine people were wounded in a shooting in downtown Tucson early Sunday, according to police. The suspected gunman, an adult man, was shot by officers and taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Officers on patrol heard gunfire around 2 a.m. and ran toward the sound, Tucson Police Department spokesperson Frank Magos said. They encountered the suspect and gave him repeated commands before an officer fired.

The nine victims and the suspect received emergency treatment at the scene before being taken to hospitals. Many of the victims were shot in their arms or legs and were in critical condition. Police said all those struck by gunfire were adults, but did not release their names.

The Pima County Sheriff's Office will lead the shooting investigation. Tucson police will also conduct an internal review of the officer who shot the suspect. All responding officers were wearing body cameras, and police said the investigation will take significant time.
