More details emerge about officer-involved shooting on Tucson's Southside

The incident began around 11:30 p.m. June 30 near East Broadway Boulevard and North Camino Seco, where officers responded to a reported carjacking. Police said a male victim was held at gunpoint and had his vehicle stolen. The victim was not hurt.

Officers shared information about the suspect and vehicle. About 15 minutes later, a license plate reader located the stolen vehicle near South Sixth Avenue and West 44th Street. The suspect reportedly sped away when officers tried to stop him, leading to a westbound pursuit on Ajo Way.

The chase ended near the Interstate 19 on-ramp when the vehicle crashed into a raised median. Police said the suspect, identified as a 17-year-old male, left the vehicle with a handgun and ran across several traffic lanes despite repeated commands to stop, drop the weapon and show his hands.

Officer Eli Miller fired his department-issued weapon, and Officer Matthew Merz struck the suspect with a patrol vehicle while trying to stop him. Miller then fired additional rounds, according to the release. Officers recovered a handgun, provided medical aid and took the suspect to a local hospital with serious injuries. He will be booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Complex after he is medically cleared. No officers or members of the public were injured.
