Measles cases rising across the US and in southern Arizona as back-to-school season approaches

Measles cases have topped last year’s total nationwide, with more than 2,300 cases reported by the CDC so far this year. Pima County has recorded three cases.

The Pima County Health Department is asking families to check children’s vaccination records before school starts. Measles can spread through coughing and talking, and virus particles may remain in the air for about two hours.

Symptoms can include a high fever, runny nose, watery eyes and a rash. People who develop symptoms should contact a doctor or the Pima County Health Department for guidance and testing.

A community health event on Aug. 4 will offer free, CDC-required immunizations for children, along with $25 sports physicals for students.
