Mass shooting suspect had earlier gun crime conviction

Police identified 21-year-old David Leroy French as the man who opened fire during a confrontation between two groups in Tucson over the weekend. Nine people were wounded, and officers shot French, making him the 10th person injured.

Court records show French previously pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. That case involved an argument two years ago in which he fired shots at a man.

A judge sentenced French to four years of probation. The conviction made him a felon and barred him from possessing a gun. He was still on probation and legally prohibited from having a firearm when the latest shooting occurred.

People downtown said the shooting was troubling, although visitors Mindy Driscoll and Eric Berg of Montana said it did not change their overall impression of Tucson. They also said such violence has become increasingly common across the country.
