Mass shooting in downtown Tucson leaves 9 injured

Nine people were wounded in a shooting early Sunday in downtown Tucson, police said. Most of the victims suffered gunshot wounds to their arms or legs. Officers gave medical aid at the scene before Tucson Fire Department crews took everyone to a local hospital.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. near East Congress Street and North Sixth Avenue. Officers on foot patrol heard gunfire and saw a male suspect running away. After officers gave him several commands, a uniformed officer fired and struck him. The suspect was hospitalized in critical condition. No officers were hurt.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting, with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department serving as the lead agency. Tucson police are conducting a separate review to determine whether department policies were followed. The findings will be sent to the Pima County Attorney’s Office after the investigation.
