Man Dies Weeks After Tucson Hit-And-Run Crash, Driver Still Sought
Wednesday, July 22, 2026 · Reported by Patch
Michael Shawn McNeal, 55, died July 9 from injuries suffered in a hit-and-run crash on Tucson’s east side, police said. The collision happened June 29 near East Broadway Boulevard and South Cherry Avenue.
McNeal was crossing Broadway from north to south around 8:30 p.m. while using a mobility walker when an eastbound vehicle struck him. Police said witnesses and nearby surveillance video showed he was crossing mid-block, not at a marked or unmarked crosswalk.
The driver left the scene and has not been identified. Tucson police’s Traffic Investigations Unit is reviewing the crash and working to find the vehicle and driver. McNeal’s injuries were initially considered non-life-threatening, but the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner later determined they were related to his death.
Anyone with information can call 911 or provide an anonymous tip through 88-CRIME. Police have reported 52 traffic deaths in Tucson so far in 2026, including 20 pedestrians. At the same point last year, the city had recorded 42 traffic fatalities.
