Local group hoping to take over Old Tucson

A local group is seeking to take over the lease of Old Tucson after American Heritage Railways said it will not extend its contract to operate the historic western theme park.

Wild West Enterprise, also known as Save Old Tucson, includes performers and longtime park fans. The group is working with Pima County to raise money, attract vendors and develop a plan based on Old Tucson’s busiest years.

Founder Robert Loebl said the group wants to expand educational programs and bring back film festivals, horseback riding and movie production. Lower ticket prices to make the park more affordable for Tucson families are also part of the proposal.

Nightfall and Yuletide are expected to take place at Old Tucson this year. The park has struggled with declining attendance since the COVID-19 pandemic, and Pima County said visitor numbers fell 11% this year. Save Old Tucson is one of several groups interested in the lease, and its proposal will be presented at a sold-out event Sunday that will also be livestreamed on Facebook.
