Like a HAWK: New crossing being installed across Country Club Road

Construction is scheduled to start Aug. 6 on a new HAWK signal at Country Club Road and Seneca Street in Midtown Tucson. The High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk is intended to make it safer for people walking, biking and using nearby bus stops.

The intersection currently does not have a protected pedestrian crossing. The city’s Department of Transportation and Mobility expects work to be finished by the end of the year.

HAWK signals stay dark until a pedestrian or cyclist activates them. The lights then signal drivers to stop while people cross the road.

City officials selected the intersection from about 300 locations considered for HAWK signals. The site is near schools and several bus stops, includes four travel lanes and is planned to become part of a future Bike Boulevard.
