Former Arizona Wildcats running back trades touchdowns for Texas-style barbecue in Tucson

Monday, August 3, 2026 · Reported by KGUN 9

Former Arizona Wildcats running back Ismail Mahdi is now co-owner of the Dickey’s Barbecue Pit on Thornydale Road in Tucson. The 23-year-old joined the restaurant business a few months after graduating from the University of Arizona.

Mahdi partnered with Manny Gomez after meeting him through a podcast. Together, they brought the Texas-style barbecue chain to Tucson. Mahdi helps cater orders, manage employees and oversee daily restaurant operations.

Mahdi grew up in Murphy, Texas, where he often ate at Dickey’s with his father after football games. He said Tucson’s community has also helped the city feel like home.

His football background still influences his approach to the business. Mahdi rushed for 853 yards in his final Arizona season and said he is frequently at the restaurant. He also hopes to continue pursuing football opportunities and is working as a running backs coach at Cholla High School.

The restaurant is open now, with a grand opening celebration planned for Aug. 22.
