Family escapes Tucson mass shooting after woman spots gunman outside pizza restaurant

A confrontation between two groups led to a shooting near Sixth Avenue and Congress Street in downtown Tucson around 2 a.m., Tucson police said. Ten people were shot, including the suspected gunman.

Police officers in the area heard the gunfire and found the suspect running from the scene. An officer shot the suspect, who was taken into custody and given first aid before being transported to a hospital in life-threatening condition.

Nine other people suffered critical gunshot wounds to their arms or legs. Pima County Attorney Laura Conover said officials hope all of them survive. The groups involved were known to one another, police said.

Anais Camacho said she was at Empire Pizza with family when she saw a person lift a shirt and realized the person had a gun. She warned her family and ran with her cousin. Shots were fired as they turned a corner, but Camacho said her family escaped unharmed. The pizza shop said two victims were on its patio.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while Tucson police will conduct an internal review. Anyone with information or video can call 88-CRIME and reference the Sheriff’s Department. Tips may be anonymous.
