Extreme Heat Warning Issued As Tucson Nears Hottest Days Of The Year

Tucson and nearby communities are heading into one of the hottest stretches of the year, with highs expected to reach 110 to 113 degrees Friday and Saturday. Overnight temperatures may stay near 90 degrees, offering little relief from the heat.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning from 10 a.m. Thursday through 8 p.m. Sunday. The warning covers Tucson, Marana, Nogales, Douglas, Sierra Vista, Safford, Willcox, Ajo and surrounding areas.

Forecasters expect major to extreme heat risks across Southern Arizona. Highs are expected to range from 101 to 106 degrees in Santa Cruz and Cochise counties, and from 107 to 112 degrees in much of the rest of the warned area.

Residents are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest afternoon hours, drink plenty of water and take breaks in shade or air conditioning. Children and pets should never be left in parked vehicles. Anyone showing signs of heat stroke should be moved to a cooler place and receive immediate medical help by calling 911.

The warning continues through Sunday evening, with temperatures expected to ease somewhat early next week.
