Downtown Tucson mass shooting suspect makes initial court appearance
Thursday, July 23, 2026 · Reported by KVOA
David French made his initial court appearance Thursday night, four days after nine people were injured in a shooting in downtown Tucson.
The court’s video feed cut out during the brief appearance. In the portion that was available, a voice said French was ready to proceed. Court officials said they are investigating the interruption.
French, 21, will be held without bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 3.
Tucson police say French fired into a crowd outside Empire Pizza on Sunday. Most of the injured people have since left the hospital. An officer shot French as he tried to flee, and he remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
