Downtown Tucson mass shooting: Here's what we know

Nine adults were critically injured in a shooting in downtown Tucson early Sunday morning. The gunfire happened around 2 a.m. outside a business in the 100 block of East Congress Street, near Sixth Avenue, after a confrontation between two groups.

Tucson police officers patrolling nearby heard the shots and responded. Officers said a suspect ran from the scene and ignored repeated commands before an officer shot him. The suspect, identified in court records as 21-year-old David Leroy French, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.

The victims’ injuries were mainly to their arms and legs. Officers provided first aid before Tucson Fire Department crews arrived, and all nine victims were taken to a hospital. Police Chief Monica Prieto later said many had been released and that all were recovering.

French was arrested in connection with the shooting. Court records show he was serving a four-year probation term related to a 2024 aggravated assault with a deadly weapon case.
