Despite success, Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd keeps his ego in check

After a 36 and 3 season that included nearly two months at No. 1 and a Final Four appearance, Arizona men’s basketball coach Tommy Lloyd drew national attention when North Carolina reportedly offered him its coaching job.

Speaking with CBS college basketball analyst Jon Rothstein on a podcast, Lloyd said the increased recognition has not changed his everyday life. He described himself as a regular person who still takes out the garbage and handles chores for his wife.

Lloyd also said he is not looking to move to an NBA coaching position. He said Tucson is a good fit for him and his family, noting that more of their relatives, including his parents, have moved to the area.

Lloyd credited the program he inherited and said he sees himself as someone who helped guide it into its next chapter, rather than treating its success as solely his own. When Rothstein discussed who might portray him in a movie, Tim Robbins was suggested, a nod to Robbins’ role in “Bull Durham.”
