Despite sheriff's crackdown, westside neighbors still hear illegal gunfire

Residents of Eagle Point Estates say illegal gunfire continues in a nearby desert area, despite enforcement efforts by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Carlos Sam and Pete Smith said the area has been quieter since Operation Desert Silence began May 2, but shots have not stopped.

Smith said neighbors recorded gunfire around 7 p.m. July 14 and called deputies while the shooting continued for about 30 minutes. Sam said he worries the department’s response could slow over time, as he says has happened in the past.

PCSD created the operation to address illegal shooting and unauthorized off-road vehicle use after the State Land Department banned recreation in the area. From May 2 through July 12, the department said deputies contacted 337 people, issued 119 citations and 81 written warnings, and made nine arrests. None of those arrests involved firearms, according to PCSD.

The neighbors are asking deputies to maintain their presence and are urging residents to keep reporting gunfire. They said stray bullets have already come close to homes and that they want to prevent anyone from being seriously hurt.
