Checking in on Arizona’s 2027 football recruits

Friday, October 16, 2026 · Reported by Arizona Daily Star

For Arizona football fans in Tucson, the Wildcats’ bye week is bringing more than a pause in the schedule. While players rest and recover, Arizona’s coaches are traveling to evaluate and strengthen the program’s future, with 16 staff members visiting prospects Friday and Saturday. The Wildcats now have 17 players committed to their 2027 recruiting class, giving Tucson an early look at the high school athletes who could eventually take the field for Arizona. Several of those commitments are already producing major numbers during their current seasons.

Head coach Brent Brennan described the recruiting trip as busy but productive, with coaches headed to Arizona, California, Texas, Utah, Florida, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. The wide geographic reach reflects the composition of the class. Eight of the 17 commitments come from Texas, one fewer than Arizona had in its 2025 and 2005 classes. Five of the Texas commitments are from Houston, while three are from Dallas. San Antonio is also represented through defensive lineman Ahzan Bacote.

California is another important part of the class, particularly Crean Lutheran in Irvine. Five Arizona commits attend the school, including quarterback Caden Jones, wide receivers Ty Johnson and Braylen Ross, and cornerbacks Evan Mack and Jacob Whitehead. Four of those players, Johnson, Mack, Jones and Whitehead, rank among Arizona’s top five 2027 commitments according to 247Sports. Their shared connection could give the class a strong built in relationship before the players arrive in Tucson, although their eventual roles at Arizona will be determined much later.

Jones, a three star quarterback, is having a productive senior season at Crean Lutheran. He has completed 66 percent of his passes for 1,591 yards, 14 touchdowns and one interception. His leading target is Ross, who is set to become his Arizona teammate. Ross has made 60 catches for 851 yards and seven touchdowns. Johnson has played in three games and recorded 11 receptions for 134 yards and one touchdown. Jones’ broader high school résumé is even more extensive. As a four year varsity player, he has completed 72 percent of his passes for 5,704 yards and 56 touchdowns.

Arizona’s class also includes a prominent defensive prospect in Salt Lake City. The 6 foot 3, 230 pound edge rusher at West High School has recorded 37 tackles and 10 sacks this season. Across his career, he has totaled 125 tackles and 28.5 sacks. The source identifies his production and school but does not provide his name in the available recruiting rundown. His numbers nevertheless show why defensive line and edge talent are part of Arizona’s recruiting focus.

Houston running back Shanks is another commitment producing at a high level. Playing for Kinkaid School, he leads the team with 18 total touchdowns, including 16 on the ground. He is averaging 140 rushing yards per game and has gained 841 yards this season. Earlier this month, he carried 32 times for 281 yards and six touchdowns in Kinkaid’s 48 to 17 victory over Episcopal. Over nearly three years, he has accumulated 4,207 rushing yards and 76 total touchdowns.

The class also features two productive players from Westfield High School in Houston. Three star linebacker Davon Smith has 57 tackles and a career best 3.5 sacks this season after making 106 tackles last year. He has also contributed on offense, rushing for 48 yards and a touchdown. Defensive lineman Logan Draper is another Westfield commitment. Together with cornerback Jaylen Oliver, Smith and Draper give Arizona three 2027 commitments from the same Houston high school.

Another Texas running back, Zeno of Paetow High School in Katy, has carried 51 times for 385 yards and three touchdowns this season, averaging 7.5 yards per attempt. He has also caught three passes for 69 yards and a touchdown, an average of 23 yards per reception. His career totals at Paetow stand at 1,074 yards and 14 touchdowns. The class currently ranks 58th nationally and 10th in the Big 12, according to 247Sports. The early commitments and current production offer a snapshot, not a finished roster, but they give Tucson supporters plenty to follow while Arizona’s coaches continue recruiting. Meanwhile, quarterback Noah Fifita has made clear how much the rivalry matters locally, saying he does not plan to leave his final game at Casino Del Sol Stadium against Arizona State with a loss.
