Block A Sports Bar and Grill in downtown Tucson opens Monday

Downtown Tucson is getting a new place to watch sports, eat, and spend an evening on Congress Street. Block A Sports Bar and Grill is scheduled to open Monday, Aug. 10, at the corner of Congress Street and Fourth Avenue, taking over the space formerly occupied by HiFi Kitchen and Cocktails. The restaurant’s owners say they want it to function more like a neighborhood pub than a club, adding a sports focused option to the downtown bar and restaurant scene.

The business is operated by Union Hospitality Group, whose Tucson portfolio also includes Union Public House, Reforma, Proof Artisanal Pizza and Pasta, and The Maverick King of Clubs. Owner and operator Grant Krueger said the group saw an unmet need downtown for a sports bar where customers could settle in for an entire game while also ordering food prepared beyond typical bar staples. The menu is expected to include burgers, fish and chips, poke nachos, Detroit style pizza, and other items.

Block A is designed around watching games in a large, visually prominent setting. The restaurant will have a jumbotron installed above the bar, along with a 24 foot curved LED wall and a 19 foot LED wall outside. Those features are intended to make the venue useful for everything from a single game to larger sports viewing gatherings, while giving the new business a distinct identity in a downtown area already known for nightlife and entertainment.

The outdoor patio is another major part of the project. It looks toward the Rialto Theatre and Hotel Congress, with a view down Congress Street. The owners have added a Mist 360 cooling system for Tucson’s heat, as well as 11 rolling shutters to help shield the patio from the setting western sun. Krueger described the patio as one of downtown’s strongest outdoor spaces and said the upgrades are meant to make it more comfortable and usable.

Krueger also framed the restaurant as a distinctly local project. Block A will have a University of Arizona sports theme, and he said the concept was created by Tucson residents who care about the city. He expressed hope that the business would help improve the corner between Congress and Fourth Avenue, making it a more inviting place to walk, visit multiple bars, and spend time downtown. The restaurant is positioned not only as a sports destination, but also as a contribution to the area’s ongoing activity and nightlife.

The opening is also bringing approximately 75 jobs to downtown. Bartender Liv Bensen said she is looking forward to the personal side of the work, including meeting customers, learning their stories, and building relationships face to face. Bartender Savanna Stapleman, who previously worked downtown, said she was happy to return and reconnect with former regulars while meeting new customers. Their comments reflect the role the restaurant hopes to play as both a destination for visitors and a familiar stop for people who already spend time in the area.

Block A’s initial opening is set for 3 p.m. Monday. During the early weekdays, the planned hours are 3 p.m. to midnight. On weekends, the business expects to introduce a brunch program within a few weeks. The restaurant also plans to be open for college football and offer NFL Sunday Ticket, with weekend operations continuing until 2 a.m. and the kitchen serving until midnight. The schedule is intended to cover afternoon games, evening outings, late night customers, and future brunch traffic.

The opening follows the departure of HiFi Kitchen and Cocktails from the downtown location, giving a familiar corner a new identity while keeping it tied to Tucson’s restaurant and entertainment economy. Union Hospitality Group’s existing businesses give the operators experience with several types of dining and nightlife concepts, but Krueger said Block A is meant to fill a specific gap rather than simply duplicate those venues. Its combination of sports programming, a substantial food menu, large screens, and an upgraded patio is aimed at customers who want more than a place to order drinks while a game plays in the background.

For Tucson residents, downtown workers, University of Arizona fans, and people visiting Congress Street, the new venue offers another option for gathering around major sporting events. The restaurant’s first day will begin in the afternoon, and its longer term plans include college football, NFL coverage, brunch, and late night service.
