Bars must offer drink spike detection kits to customers under Tempe ordinance

About 60 Tempe bars and restaurants must now keep drink spiking detection kits available to customers and post awareness signs in their restrooms. The ordinance took effect Aug. 1.

The requirement applies to businesses that serve alcohol after midnight more than three days a month. Businesses may sell the kits for up to 150% of what they paid. They can also qualify for a 25% liquor license tax rebate by providing drink covers, storing the tests correctly and filing quarterly compliance reports.

Knope donated 8,600 detection tests, valued at nearly $50,000, to help businesses begin following the ordinance.
