Barrio Anita neighborhood gives away free school supplies
Sunday, July 26, 2026 · Reported by KGUN 9 Local News
Families gathered at Oury Park on Sunday for free school supplies and haircuts as Barrio Anita residents helped prepare local children for the school year. The event was hosted by Gracie Soto, owner of Anita’s St. Market and president of the Barrio Anita Neighborhood Association.
Soto began the giveaway 16 years ago, but it paused for two years because of personal struggles. Community donations helped bring it back, with support from local organizations, families, customers, friends and people in California with ties to Barrio Anita. Food and drinks were also available.
A barber from Goodfellas Barber Lounge provided free haircuts for children. Jessica Sobel, a mother of four and teacher, said extra supplies that her family cannot use will go to her students on Tucson’s south side.
Families who missed the event can call Anita’s Market to ask whether supplies remain. Soto also plans to donate leftover items to Davis Elementary.
