Back-to-school tech prices keep climbing as AI data centers drive global memory shortage

For Tucson families preparing for another school year, the rising cost of laptops, tablets and phones could make an already expensive shopping season even harder. Parents are spending an average of $800 to $1,000 per child on back to school supplies, and those totals can reach several thousand dollars when a student also needs a laptop, phone, smartwatch or other connected device. Technology experts say the pressure may intensify rather than ease, as artificial intelligence data centers consume more of the memory chips used in everyday electronics.

Matt Rosen, founder and chief executive of the technology consulting firm Allata Tech, said the consumer market is facing a worldwide memory shortage. The shortage is being driven largely by the enormous computing needs of AI systems, whose servers require far more memory than ordinary personal computers. Rosen said industry projections point to 2027 as potentially the most severe memory shortage on record. For Tucson students and parents, that could mean higher prices or fewer affordable choices when it is time to replace an aging device.

The problem begins with the competition for RAM, the temporary memory that helps computers and phones run programs. Major technology companies are placing extremely large orders to equip new AI data centers, effectively signaling to manufacturers that they will purchase as much memory as factories can produce. According to reporting cited by Consumer Reports, manufacturers such as Samsung and SK Hynix have been shifting production away from standard consumer memory and toward more profitable enterprise chips. With only three major RAM manufacturers serving the market, there is limited capacity to absorb the additional demand without affecting prices for everyone else.

The increases are already visible in the component market. A 32 gigabyte RAM kit that sold for $90 on Sept. 11 rose to $269.99 by Nov. 21, then reached $349.99 when checked again later. That kind of change can eventually filter into the price of finished products, including laptops, tablets and smartphones. The shortage is also spreading to other storage components. Demand for AI systems is tightening supplies of NAND flash, used in solid state drives, as well as traditional hard drives. Contract prices for traditional hard drives reportedly rose about 4 percent in the most recent quarter as cloud companies purchased large capacity drives.

Consumers may not yet see the full impact in Tucson stores because retailers planned holiday promotions months in advance. Avery Bissett, a laptop and desktop analyst at the retail research firm OpenBrand, said those existing plans have temporarily protected shoppers from higher production costs. Retailers are still selling some laptops and other electronics at promotional prices, even as the components inside them become more expensive. That delay could disappear after holiday inventory is sold and new supplier agreements take effect.

Industry analysts expect 2026 to be one of the most expensive years for consumer electronics in a long time. The effects will not be limited to computers. RAM is used in televisions, tablets, smartphones and smart home equipment, so a broad range of products could be affected. Consumer Reports advised people who already know they will need a replacement device next year to consider buying during the current period of aggressive discounts, rather than assuming next summer’s back to school sales will offer the same deals.

Higher prices are not the only concern. Manufacturers may try to preserve familiar price points by quietly reducing the performance or features of their products, a practice often called shrinkflation. Avril Wu of the market research firm TrendForce said high end devices are more likely to receive direct price increases, while midrange and budget models may be adjusted to lower specifications. A laptop that appears similar to a previous model could have 8 gigabytes of RAM instead of 16, a dimmer display or fewer features. OpenBrand’s Bissett said companies could make those changes while continuing to advertise products at familiar prices such as $599 or $799.

Smartphone buyers could face similar tradeoffs. Counterpoint Research expects average smartphone prices to rise 6.9 percent next year, while some manufacturers may reduce the quality of cameras, displays and audio components in less expensive models. Some lower priced phones could disappear from product lines altogether. That would leave budget shoppers with fewer choices, forcing them either to pay more for a better equipped phone or accept a device with fewer capabilities.

For Tucson families trying to manage those costs, Rosen recommends considering a Chromebook, particularly for students whose schoolwork is mostly web based. Chromebooks generally cost between $200 and $500, making them less expensive than many full laptops. Buyers can also consider older or refurbished models, since year to year improvements are often modest. A previous generation laptop or phone may provide enough performance for schoolwork at a substantially lower price. Shoppers should compare multiple retailers as well, since large stores may be able to keep older, lower priced inventory longer than smaller businesses. Holding onto a working device, even for another year, may also help families avoid buying during the expected peak of the shortage.
