Arizona mass shooter fires wildly into crowd in shocking video, before hero cops take him down

Tuesday, July 28, 2026 · Reported by New York Post

Newly released security video shows a man opening fire near Empire Pizza & Pub in Tucson shortly after 2 a.m. on July 19. Police said David Leroy French, 21, had argued with a group before allegedly shooting into the crowd and injuring nine people.

The video shows French firing several shots while walking backward along the sidewalk, then running away as people scatter. The crowd is not visible in the footage.

Tucson police officers on routine patrol heard the gunfire and chased French. Less than 10 seconds after the shooting began, officers shot him, and video shows him falling onto the sidewalk. He was taken to a hospital and initially listed in critical condition.

French was arraigned from his hospital bed Thursday and charged with assault and weapons possession. He was already on probation after pleading guilty to a separate shooting in October 2024. The pizza restaurant’s owners also said in an Instagram post that they believe downtown Tucson has become more dangerous in recent years.
