ADOT project to widen I-19 ramps, add bridge near Tucson

The Arizona Department of Transportation is starting a major reconstruction project at the I-19 and Irvington Road interchange on Tucson’s southwest side. Construction is expected to affect commutes for the next couple of years.

The project will widen Irvington Road, add turn lanes and build a new bridge over I-19. It also includes a new ramp from eastbound Irvington Road to northbound I-19, wider freeway on-ramps and an additional merge lane for northbound traffic.

The work will include safety upgrades for pedestrians and bicyclists on both sides of Irvington Road. Drivers should expect lane shifts, barricades and detours, while nearby businesses are concerned about access for customers.

ADOT expects the project to be completed by spring 2028. Officials said the schedule already accounts for monsoon weather and that storms are not currently expected to delay the work.
