A-10s make farewell flight at DM

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base marked the A-10 Warthog’s departure from Tucson with a celebration Wednesday that also brought a sense of loss. The aircraft is being reassigned as it moves toward retirement.

Two A-10s flew farewell passes over the base, including the tight turns the aircraft is known for during close air support missions.

Davis-Monthan has been home to the A-10 and its pilot training program since the planes first arrived more than 50 years ago. The aircraft’s official name is the Thunderbolt II, though its rugged appearance earned it the Warthog nickname.

The remaining A-10s are expected to make their final flights in about four years. Until then, they will be based in Georgia and Missouri while Davis-Monthan focuses on rescue and special operations missions.
