9 people shot and injured in downtown Tucson early Sunday

At least nine adults were critically injured in a shooting early Sunday in downtown Tucson. The gunfire broke out around 2 a.m. in a busy entertainment area, according to Tucson police spokesperson Officer Frank Magos.

Officers on foot patrol heard the shots and moved toward the sound. They found the suspected shooter, gave him repeated commands and then shot him when the threat continued, police said. Officers provided first aid to the suspect and victims.

The victims were taken to area hospitals with gunshot wounds to their extremities. The suspect, an adult man whose name was not released, was also hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

The motive remains under investigation. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation because the incident involved police gunfire. Investigators asked anyone with information or video of the shooting to contact them.
