35 rescues so far for Southern Arizona Rescue Association in 2026

The Southern Arizona Rescue Association has responded to 35 rescues so far this year. SARA is warning hikers that temperatures above 100 degrees and too little water can quickly become dangerous.

Rescuers recommend carrying one liter of water per person, per hour, and bringing more than you expect to need. They also suggest hiking early in the morning, before triple digit temperatures arrive. Heat exhaustion can develop in as little as 15 to 20 minutes.

SARA recently assisted with a rescue at Tanque Verde Canyon after a man injured his leg. The area’s rocks and boulders can make it difficult to reach and carry out injured hikers, and a helicopter may be needed.

Hikers should tell someone where they are going and when to expect them back. Hats and sunscreen can help provide protection, and people should ask their doctors how medications may affect heat tolerance. If you get into trouble, call 911. Search and rescue services are free.
