10 people struck in downtown Tucson mass shooting; Officer shoots armed suspect

Ten adults were struck by gunfire early Sunday in downtown Tucson, including nine bystanders and the suspected shooter, Tucson police said. The incident happened around 2 a.m. in the 100 block of East Congress Street.

Downtown patrol officers heard multiple shots and ran toward the area. They encountered a man fleeing the scene and gave him several commands before a uniformed officer fired a department-issued weapon, hitting him.

Officers detained the man and provided first aid until Tucson Fire Department crews arrived. He was taken to a hospital in life-threatening condition. The other victims, who primarily suffered gunshot wounds to their extremities, were also treated and taken to area hospitals. No officers were hurt.

Police said the initial gunfire involved two groups who knew each other. The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while the Pima County Sheriff's Department is handling the criminal investigation.
