About Zen Desert Sangha

Zen Desert Sangha is a lay Buddhist meditation group serving Tucson as a community resource for Zen practice, reflection, and connection. Affiliated with the Diamond Sangha, the group welcomes anyone interested in meditation, including people who are new to Zen. Its Tucson zendo hosts regular in-person gatherings, while some practice opportunities are also available online. The sangha describes itself as open to everyone and provides a setting where newcomers can begin learning about Zen practice alongside more experienced practitioners.

The group's regular schedule includes evening zazen on Mondays and Wednesdays, as well as a Saturday morning practice. Saturday gatherings include tea ceremony, zazen, samu, or work practice, and sutra chanting. The practice periods alternate 25 minutes of sitting meditation with five minutes of walking meditation, known as kinhin. These elements give participants a structured introduction to the rhythms of Zen practice, with periods of stillness balanced by movement, chanting, and shared activity. Saturday morning participation is available remotely through Zoom as well as in person.

Zen Desert Sangha also offers support for people taking their first steps into the tradition. Newcomers are welcome at scheduled meditation sessions, and the group provides orientations to Zen practice. An individual orientation can be arranged by request. The website includes additional information about getting started, zendo procedures, health protocols, and the Zen Desert Sangha Sūtra Book. Visitors are encouraged to arrive before a scheduled session, and the group asks those interested in updates and further connection to join its email list.

The sangha's lineage connects its Tucson practice to the broader Diamond Sangha network and to the teachings of Robert Aitken Roshi and Pat Hawk Roshi. The Diamond Sangha is a lay sangha founded in Hawaii in 1959 by Robert and Anne Aitken. Aitken Roshi received dharma transmission from Yamada Koun Roshi in 1974 at Sanun Zendo in Kamakura, Japan, the headquarters temple of the Sanbo Kyodan. Within that history, the Diamond Sangha is described as an independent Zen lineage in the Harada-Yasutani tradition, combining elements of the Rinzai and Soto schools of Zen.

Zen Desert Sangha traces its lineage to Hakuin Ekaku, the 18th-century reformer of the Rinzai sect, and Dogen Kigen, the 13th-century founder of the Soto sect in Japan. Its practice therefore incorporates elements of both traditions rather than presenting itself as belonging exclusively to one. In Tucson, that lineage is expressed through a recurring schedule of meditation, chanting, tea, work practice, orientations, talks, retreats, and other sangha gatherings listed through the group's online events calendar. People interested in beginning can attend a scheduled meditation session without contacting the group in advance, or request an orientation to learn more about the practice and the zendo.
