About The Century Room
The Century Room is a Tucson jazz club and lounge connected with Hotel Congress. Its programming centers on live jazz while also making room for related styles, including jazz manouche, soul jazz, hip-hop, Latin jazz, Caribbean music, and music from the big band tradition. The space serves mezcal, cocktails, beer, and food, giving concertgoers a setting where listening to the music and spending time in the lounge are part of the same experience.
The club's calendar reflects a broad view of jazz and its surrounding musical communities. Regular programming includes the Century Jazz Orchestra, a 17-piece ensemble inspired by the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. The orchestra performs music associated with the Count Basie Orchestra, Duke Ellington Orchestra, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and other big band figures. Its intergenerational lineup brings students, teachers, and professional musicians together, and the ensemble is supported by the Sonora Arts & Music Initiative 501(c)(3).
Other recurring performances highlight different corners of the jazz tradition. The Hot Club of Tucson Quartet, featuring Nick Coventry, Matt Mitchell, Evan Dain, and Marco Rosano, performs French jazz manouche in the style of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli. The club's Hot Jazz Wednesdays also include Marco & The Polos, with music from New Orleans and Chicago. Soul Jazz Lounge performances feature rotating all-star house bands and the Century Room's Viscount Legend Soul Organ, a modern recreation of vintage Hammond B3 instruments. The organ is provided through the Tucson Jazz Music Foundation.
The Century Room also presents artists whose work connects jazz with contemporary Tucson music. The Newest Sound is a hip-hop and jazz collective that includes members of Tucson's Street Blues Family and blends live improvisation with groove-driven beats. Other events have featured Tucson singer Chelsee Hicks performing classic standards with a trio of keys, organ, and drums, as well as Latin and Caribbean music from Grupo Riken. The club's calendar includes late-night sets and after-show performances, such as drummer Kenji Lancaster with his band and a program of Pat Metheny's music by drummer JC Chiriguayo and guitarist Chris Molinari.
Participation is part of the club's identity as well. Jazz jam sessions invite musicians to sit in with multi-instrumentalist Max Goldschmid and the Century Room house band, with the band opening with a short set before the instrumental jam begins. The club also presents performances by visiting and local musicians in formats that range from intimate lounge shows to larger ensemble concerts. Events may offer multiple sets, matinees, or late-night performances, so the experience varies with the calendar.
