Anchored in Tucson's Sugar Hill neighborhood, Mount Calvary reaches beyond its immediate surroundings through ministries, partnerships, worship services, educational programs, and assistance for people facing day to day challenges.
The church traces its beginnings to 1900, before Arizona became a state. Reverend John B. Bell, a Baptist missionary who came to Tucson, conducted services within the city's Black community. Ten men and women later organized a mission to continue the ministry, meeting in a small building near Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street that was shared with the Methodist Church. Reverend Vance Cole became the congregation's first pastor in 1901. The church adopted the name Second Baptist Church in 1904, then became known as Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church around 1910.
As the congregation grew, it moved to several locations before purchasing land near North Tenth Avenue and West Fourth Street in the early 1920s. The church built its first permanent building and a parsonage there. The current facility was completed in February 1956 and included a sanctuary, balcony, educational building, and paved parking. Fellowship Hall and additional educational classrooms were added in the late 1980s. Mount Calvary continues to use its sanctuary, renovated Fellowship Hall and classrooms, Administration Building, and parking areas. The congregation celebrated its centennial in November 2000, marking a century of history shared with Tucson and with religious organizations at local, state, and national levels.
Community service has been part of Mount Calvary's work across generations. In cooperation with the City of Tucson, the church received partial funding to begin Mount Calvary Day Care and established a church library. It also worked with the city's Model Cities Program. The Harvest Fellowship feeding program was expanded over time and continues as part of the church's service efforts. The Mission Ministry has provided sleeping bags and other needed day to day assistance, while the Christmas Miracle program offered gifts and support through the generosity of the congregation. Youth and family programs have included the After School Achievers Program, formerly known as the Haven of Hope, which served young people from neighborhoods near the church. Ministries have also included Golden Agers for seniors and a range of youth focused activities.
Mount Calvary's history includes music, education, social justice, and public engagement. In the 1970s, the Cathedral Choir participated in a citywide gospel workshop and concert at the Tucson Community Center under the direction of Reverend James L. Cleveland. The choir and Gospel Workshop Choir also made a live recording, "Nothing But the Blood," in 1971. The Social Justice Ministry created "Cookin' from the Hip: Recipes and Remembrances," a cookbook sharing recipes and memories from the congregation and Tucson's community, and later produced the "Through Our Eyes" calendars. The church has participated in the Tucson Rodeo Parade and has developed connections with Baptist organizations including the Southern District Association, Paradise State Convention, and National Baptist Convention.
Today, Mt Calvary offers Sunday School, worship, Bible study, prayer services, and a weekday morning prayer line. Wednesday evening Bible study is offered through Zoom, and weekly sermons can be streamed live or viewed through the church's sermon archives. The church also presents news and events, including Vacation Bible School and other activities listed on its calendar.
