The story of Gourmet Girls begins with Mary Steiger and Susan Fulton, whose backgrounds brought together culinary experience, business knowledge, and a shared interest in food and wellness. Steiger began cooking as a child and knew by age seven that she wanted to become a baker. She attended the Scottsdale Culinary Institute, graduated as valedictorian of her class, worked as a pastry chef in a variety of high-end venues, managed several large retail bakeries, and owned and operated a bed and breakfast inn.
Fulton came to the partnership through a different route. She studied anthropology, worked in business and accounting, and spent time living on a small sailboat in Mexico. Her interest in food continued throughout those experiences, including work in restaurant kitchens and dining rooms. Steiger and Fulton met in a business networking group after their paths brought them together in Tucson in 2008. They soon discovered a shared enthusiasm for creating and eating delicious, healthy foods, as well as an interest in alternative forms of wellness care.
The two began with a small catering company, where a client's request for a gluten free cake led them to research available products and try to create something better. Their work developed into an ongoing process of experimentation and education as they created their own recipes and adopted the gluten free lifestyle themselves. After selling their baked goods at local farmers markets, they opened the retail Bakery/Bistro in Tucson, where everything remains gluten free. The business credits community support with helping Steiger and Fulton build their dreams while meeting the needs of their guests.
